Our Editor's Poem Of the Month
Bilbo's Dreams (The Hobbit) by MJ Harris
Blank verse (UK English)
Centred around
'The Hobbit'
The hollow steps tread ancient paths
as ringing voices reach the sky;
the forest whispers to cool breeze
dear Rivendell still holds my heart.
Shadows stretch toward unknown end,
holding mysteries deep inside;
the nightmares calm...then outward call,
I shall explore this land once more.
I journeyed far in younger days
away from comfort, Shire and kin.
A group of strangers, bold and strong,
we battled Orcs and flying beasts.
Throughout the trials, I changed a bit -
this Baggin's heart found deeper strength.
I thought of them instead of me,
and helped to free a troubled kind.
The dragon, Smaug, inflicted dread
but Bard dispatched him with his bow.
I still can hear the cheering town
that beckons me through echoed time.
A traveller I'll always be,
adventure courses through my soul.
Return I must to wonder's call,
to journey there and back again.
Bilbo's Dreams (The Hobbit)
carries the reader to a different place, a different
time, and a different world - a world of fantasy. The
poem is a tribute to The Hobbit, a novel which
J.R.R. Tolkien originally wrote as a children's story. A
hobbit named Bilbo Baggins, the protagonist of The
Hobbit, is the narrator chosen by Harris for this
piece. But even readers who are not familiar with
Tolkien's work can find meaning and escape in the lines
of this poem.

Our Winning Entry for March's word contest
The Miscommunication by
Jo Lynn Ehnes
Love? You want to speak of it? That soft emotion dancing on a calm and timeless
ocean- Timeless? No, spineless. There were no sugared smiles beneath a vivid golden moon. Was it just yesterday
when his anger overflowed? Nay, there were many
yesterdays when I sought refuge in that
damp, unlighted basement, searching through boxes, yes boxes, of unwanted anecdotes. What? You
think I was seeking out that orange glow
from once remembered passion? No, I was just mumbling to myself "Where are those
damn candles?"

Second Place
A Captain's
Treasure by MJ Harris
Third Place
Just Words by Ellen B
The Contest: How did it
work?
Members had to craft a poem using these words:
basement - anger - smiles - love -
orange - candles - emotion -
yesterday - moon - ocean
Clearly for fun, we had some very
nice entries and we had a great time just reading them.
If yours wasn't chosen as a winner - check to see you
used all the words. One of our favorites missed one
word.
We'll have another contest in April
..... watch for it and a few other new contests in the
Just For Fun forum.

We're about more than publishing BUT
we're still very much about publishing. Just three years
young, we began our publishing efforts in 2004.
Since then we have grown up and out. Up, because
we've now published 17 books. Out because we're
branching out with our first novel due out in June.
We're certainly not your
run of the mill
publisher. With our cooperative program our number
one mission is to work with the authors to create a book
that looks and feels professional. We have much to
learn but we welcome that learning. A huge part of
that learning is wrapped up in this site. We want
to be visible, available and useful. We just
opened the new site March 15th. We hope you'll
sign up now and then sign on often.
